Controlling Corrosion at the Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Pool
The Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Pool is located on the western shores of Woolloomooloo
Bay in Sydney Harbour.
Sydney City Council awarded a contract to Reed Constructions Aust. to demolish and
rebuild the entire site. Their scope included re-coating of the steel piles which
supports the concrete platform and apply an impressed current cathodic protection
system.
Australasian Industrial Wrappings & Coatings Pty. Ltd was awarded these two
contracts and started earlier this year.
Australian owned manufacturer Australasian Industrial Wrappings & Coatings Pty
Ltd (AIWC) supplies corrosion prevention coatings and pipeline equipment to the
mining, oil and gas, petrochemical, civil, marine and water industries.
AIWC manufactures & supplies petrolatum tapes, bitumen tapes, butyl tapes, heat
shrink sleeves, cathodic protection, warning tapes, rock mesh, hot tapping equipment,
paddock markers, wharf pile claddings, epoxies, and pipe fittings
The first step of re-coating of the older type steel piles, Hollow Segmented Pile (HP2)
was to remove the old Petrolatum and Bituminous Tapes which was approx. 27 years
old.
The Client chose to renew with a similar system from AIWC utilising the latest
technology in Petrolatum Tapes (RAM Marine Tape) and Bitumen / Butyl Tapes
(Flexi Seal 1000).
The RAM Series 1 System which was used was ideal for this project as minimal
surface preparation is required and the RAM Marine Primer can be applied
underwater.
Once all the piles were coated they were mechanically protected by RAM Rock Mesh
which was secured by using Delrin Strapping (non corrosive).
To assist in corrosion protection AIWC installed the impressed current cathodic
protection system.

All works were completed on time and on budget with no fuss.
